highcountry
A retreat to reconnect with land, light and stillness.
The weather rolls down the valley in a dark, brooding sheet; brumbies graze, untroubled, before the glass walls and inside the fire crackles as you sink into an armchair, held in the stillness of the alpine plateau.
Set within the wilds of the alpine high country, Stone and Snow is more than a home, it is a place of renewal. Designed for a professional couple seeking escape from city life, it is a sanctuary where the rhythm of the mountains becomes the rhythm of daily living.
The glass pavilion opens in every direction, framing 360-degree views of mountains, snow, eucalypts and sky. At its heart, a spine wall of granite quarried from the site anchors the house to the land, while handmade recycled timber portals mark moments of transition. Light filters from overhead skylights, shifting across the wall through the day and seasons, creating a quiet drama that draws the outdoors in.
Inside, spaces for gathering and retreat flow seamlessly: a generous living and dining area with a double-sided wood-fired fireplace, a timber-lined sauna and an expansive master suite where luxury and stillness coexist. Outside, terraces extend into the landscape with a sunken firepit and spa, ensuring that entertaining feels as effortless as solitude.
Self-sufficient but never sparing, the retreat is powered by solar, hydronics and timber harvested from the land. Its essence is sanctuary — a home that restores balance, deepens connection and celebrates life in the alpine high country.
As the clients said: “Everyone who has seen the building is in awe.”
